I decided to read this book because it was the runner-up for Canada Reads this year. Rawi Hage is a talented writer whose characters represent an important issue in Canadian society: the difficulties of integration for immigrants from war-torn, traumatized countries. The problem is that the main character and most of the people that he associates with are so completely unlikable that it is very difficult to relate to them or empathize with their problems. I really did not enjoy reading this book although it was well-written.

Perhaps like a cockroach, just the idea of it makes you uncomfortable.

Beatifully written. Distinct honesty. The beauty of dark comedy.

There are not many books I cannot finish. This was one of them.

Didn't know whether to give it a 2 or a 3. Not my type of book.
