So, the middle book in the trilogy. Lots of story-building to move the story from book one to book three. The characters change and develop, the seraphim and chimaera are still battling, and there's lots of devastation. It was interesting to see how the story arc built to the final chapters which set the stage for the big finale. I must admit I was surprised at the final denouement, but looking back, the author left clues. I just didn't put the pieces together. It ends with a big reveal that made me want to get right on to the next one so fortunately I have already checked out the audio and physical copy.Alert for gentle readers: language, warfare, and an attempted rape scene This was a satisfying sequel to Daughter of Smoke and Bone, though significantly darker. This second instalment really digs into the aftermath of the first book, and it was fast-paced and full of action, surprises, and suspense. I enjoyed that this book had more sections written from other characters' points of view; it really enhanced the novel and helped to flesh it out. Mik and Zuzana's relationship was such a welcome break from all of the doom and gloom in the book; I am happy that this story line was written into the books. I am excited to read the sure-to-be thrilling finale to this fantastic series that Taylor has woven. The world is so imaginative and real, you can't help but get sucked in!
great about a cliff hanger! I hope the 3rd book is as good as the 1st two
