I LOVE this book. The idea of putting poetry to a beat, is fantastic. This will keep kids engaged, and allow them to incorporate movement as well. It also incorporates a lot of modern artists into the compilation, which makes it more relevant for older students. The collection of poetry throughout the book is diverse, and touches on various themes, making it appealing to different types of audiences. I would use this book in my classroom to start the day, or to incorporate it into a lesson about poetry. I would use this among students at the second grade level and above. I think that it brings a new spin to poetry and makes it a bit more interesting to those who may not think that poetry is for them. A must have for anyone who enjoys hip hop, poetry, spoken word, or African American literature. I love that many of the authors themselves read their pieces, on the CD, and also the old-school hip hop songs included. I just wish that the CD included entire songs, not just excerpts. My daughters (6 and 3) and I listen to this CD in the car every day. I even listen to it when they're not in the car. It always inspires, and makes me smile.
Includes the Martin Luther King Jr.'s speech, Langston Hughes, Gary Soto, and Maya Angelou
Boys loved the rhythm, variety, and messages of the poems. The CD was a wonderful bonus.
A great collection of artist and poetry and an extra prize. . . a CD!!
