Having read If It Flies and If It Fornicates, I was keen to read about Red Tie and the story didn't disappoint.Cal and James do finally act on their attraction, but that is where a lot of problems start - and who do you go to for couples therapy? An ex rent bot sadist called Nick, thats who!Cal takes to topping James well but it is the other parts of the dreaded R word (relationship) that trip them up.A good, gripping, intense read. Initially I decided to skip volumes 5 and 6 of this series-they didn’t sound as interesting to me, and I hated to put the money in if I wasn’t going to enjoy it, so I jumped straight to this book, and wow, did it pack a punch!I think the theme of this book was anticipation; glorious, deLISHcious anticipation. I was practically on the edge of my seat, talking to my ereader, my cats and anyone else that was nearby as I breathlessly wondered aloud ‘…and then’? The chemistry between James and Cal is electric, and watching Cal push James’s buttons was such a turn on. Around the middle of the book it evened out a bit, and we see Cal learning to be the Dom James needs. Watching the power struggle between the two, trying to find balance between their day jobs when James was in charge, and the rest of the time, when Cal was calling the shots was so titillating, I had to force myself to slow down and not jump ahead. Added to which, I was thrilled to see Nick and Spencer in this book, with Nick playing an active role! I would have loved to have a bit more Spencer, but was content with what I got. There were times when I thought Cal was a little moody, maybe moreso than it called for, but ratcheting up the tension was all part of the fun, and really worked within the story. SPOILER SPOILER SPOILEROne thing I have to take the authors to task for though, on this and a couple of the other books, is the quickness of the ‘I love you’ scenes. They’ve been giving us such smart writing, realistic and sexy, but for jaded men who go around buying and selling sex, they are very quick to-in the span of days-declare their feelings for each other. When I don’t get the warm and fuzzies when I see characters saying those treasured words, and instead fight a cringe, I know it’s not been done right. And the fact that both characters are on the same page at the same time; ‘I love you’, ‘oh, I love you right back’ also feels convenient. Sorry, but we hardcore romance readers have pretty strong feelings about insta-love!END SPOILER END SPOILER END SPOILERI felt let down when the book was over, only because I have been enjoying the series and this was the latest in it, that I decided to go back and reread v. 5 and 6 after all. Those were ‘meh’ but I’m not sorry I read them. Still, v. 7 knocks it out of the park and I can’t wait for the next one!!
If It Drives, aka, In which Red Tie's driver gets more than he bargained for. Novel length.
Ladies and gents - my first-ever writer protagonist. And he's writing space opera!
Loved it. Can't say it any better than Heather, so I'll leave it at that. :D
